Wordle #1458: Clues and answer for today’s puzzle

Another Monday, another Wordle. A fresh start to the week and a chance to prove that your vocabulary hasn’t dulled over the weekend. As the summer rolls in and the days grow longer, there’s no better way to kick off the morning than with a quick five-letter puzzle. Let’s see if you can crack Wordle #1458 before your coffee gets cold.

If you’re here for Sunday’s Wordle (#1457) recap, you can find that post [here]. Otherwise, let’s dig into today’s hints, clues, and answer.

Wordle Hints Today

The Hint: Something unimportant — but in a way that annoys you.

The Clue: There’s a double letter in this one.

That should narrow it down quite a bit. Double letters always help cut the field. Think of words you’d use to describe someone who’s making a big deal out of nothing. Ready to guess? Scroll slowly — spoilers ahead!

Wordle Answer Today

Today’s Wordle Answer: PETTY

Yes, petty. As in “Stop being so petty about it!” It’s a word we’ve all heard, maybe even been called (hopefully not today). If you guessed this one quickly, pat yourself on the back — it’s not the hardest Wordle out there, but it’s definitely not a freebie either.

Wordle Bot Analysis

Let’s walk through the game. I opened with my usual starter: CRATE. That gave me a yellow ‘T’ and a green ‘E’, not a bad start. Wordle Bot said I narrowed it down to 15 potential solutions from that one guess.

For my second word, I went with NEEDY — not because I was feeling it, but because I wanted to test out the double ‘E’ and ‘Y’. It was a bit of a gamble, and honestly, it didn’t do me many favors. The bot wasn’t impressed. Still, I now had three green letters: P_E_T.

The next guess came to me quickly — PETTY. It made perfect sense: fit the known letters, had a double ‘T’, and captured the vibe of the hint perfectly. I typed it in, hit Enter, and… green across the board! A three-guess solve.

Not my fastest game ever, but a solid performance to start the week.

Competitive Wordle Score

Here’s how the scoring breaks down for today’s puzzle:

  • Guessed in 3: +1 point
  • Beat Wordle Bot (who solved in 4): +1 point

Total score for the day: 2 points

Running tally:

  • Me: 13 points
  • Bot: 7 points

(And remember — Friday games count for double points, so keep that in mind when the weekend nears.)

Today’s Wordle Etymology

Let’s talk word origins. Petty comes from the Middle English pety, borrowed from Old French petit, which means “small” or “little.” That word traces further back to Vulgar Latin pitittus, also meaning “small.”

Over time, the meaning shifted from simply “small” to something more negative — like a “petty argument” or “petty revenge.” It’s the sort of smallness that feels mean or unnecessarily critical.

Funny how a word that once described something innocent now carries a bit of a sting, huh?

Final Thoughts

Today’s Wordle wasn’t too tricky, but it did require some smart guesses and maybe a little luck. The double ‘T’ might have tripped a few people up, but once you got those green tiles in place, the path to the answer was pretty clear.

How did you do? Did you crush it in two? Take five guesses and barely squeak by? Or did “petty” end up being today’s villain? Let me know — I’d love to hear your Wordle journey.
