Hey, puzzle solvers! Welcome to your daily rundown of the NYT Strands puzzle. If you’re looking for the hints, the spangram, and all of today’s answers, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into the details for Friday, May 9.
What Is Strands?
If you’re new to the game, here’s a quick explainer. Strands is the NYT’s latest brain-teasing addition to its word game lineup. Think of it as a twist on the traditional word search—with an added challenge.
Each puzzle features a 6×8 grid of letters. Your task is to uncover a group of related words based on a daily theme. Along the way, you’ll also need to find a special word called the spangram—a longer word or phrase that ties everything together and stretches across the board, connecting at least two sides.
Theme words stay highlighted in blue, and the spangram in yellow. The kicker? Every single letter is used once and only once.
You can connect letters in any direction—horizontal, vertical, or diagonal—and change directions mid-word. And if you find three valid non-theme words with at least four letters, you’ll unlock a Hint button to help you out.

Thoughts On Today’s Puzzle
This was one of the more straightforward puzzles we’ve seen recently. As soon as I spotted TENT in the top left corner, the theme became immediately clear. From there, BACKPACK and THERMOS helped reinforce the idea, and finding the spangram CAMPING GEAR only took a few more moments.
What made this puzzle enjoyable was how cohesive the theme felt. No curveballs—just classic camping must-haves. It’s a satisfying solve that doesn’t require obscure words or complicated logic.
If you’re playing along daily, this was a refreshing midweek puzzle—challenging enough to make you think, but accessible for casual players, too.
