A security guard, who unselfishly and heroically rushed to the aid of dozens of New Yorkers during the Times Square shooting, was honored Wednesday and awarded with a $1000 check.
Security Officer, Paul Maxo, was working at his post outside 1540 Broadway when the shots rang out. As New Yorkers and Tourists ran for their lives, Maxo courageously sprang into action, coming to the aid of several tourists and New Yorkers, including a mother and her infant. Maxo brought people inside the store he worked and made sure everyone was safe by locking the door.
Former NYPD Detective and NYC security professional, Richard “Bo” Dietl did not allow Maxo’s brave act and sacrifice to go unrewarded. He presented Maxo with a $1000 dollar check and kiss of gratitude, calling the veteran security guard “a hero.”
“Things happen,” Maxo told reporters. “On that day I came to work to do my job. My job that day became to save as many people as I could and protect the store.”
Maxo added that when he heard the shots, he did not have time to think about himself or fear. He was there to do his job and to protect people.
Two women and a 4-year-old girl, believed to be innocent bystanders, were wounded in the shooting that occurred May 8th. While people scattered, running for cover, Maxo ran out amid the gunfire to rescue as many people as he could.
The NYPD arrested suspect, Farrakhan Muhammad, 31, as the alleged shooter.
“While our beloved Times Square was under assault, Paul put his life in danger to protect others,” said Maxo’s boss, Bo Dietl. “That’s who he is. That’s who we are. We will always protect New York City.”
