The Odyssey First Look: Matt Damon as Odysseus in an Epic Adventure

The first look at Christopher Nolan’s epic retelling of The Odyssey has finally been unveiled, and it promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally resonant big-screen experience. Featuring Matt Damon as the legendary Greek warrior Odysseus, the movie boasts an all-star roster and cutting-edge IMAX technology, setting the stage for an epic adventure like no other.

Matt Damon as Odysseus: A Rediscovered Hero

A dramatic freeze of the film was shared on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of The Odyssey with Matt Damon fully brought to life as the battle-hardened king. The message read: “Matt Damon is Odysseus. Christopher Nolan’s film, #TheOdysseyMovie July 17, 2026.”

This is a historic moment in the career of Nolan as he dips into the pool of ancient myths. Having already collaborated with Damon on Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023), the director chose the Oscar winner once more to play a complicated historical character.

A Stellar Ensemble Cast

Added to the majesty of the film is an all-star cast including Tom Holland, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. The cast brings some magic to the film, making it one of the most eagerly anticipated Hollywood movies in years.

While Damon is the roving hero, rampant rumors abound about the roles of the rest of the supporting cast. Will Zendaya be playing Penelope, Odysseus’s devoted wife? Will Robert Pattinson have a vengeful suitor role? Nolan’s signature secrecy only contributes to the intrigue surrounding the film.

A Mythic Journey Brought to Life

Based on Homer’s The Odyssey, a Western literary classic, the film follows Odysseus’ journey home after the Trojan War in a series of adventures involving mythical creatures, vengeful gods, and deadly seas, testing his physical prowess and wits.

Universal Pictures who is a longtime Nolan partner, calls the movie a “mythic action epic.” The self-described compulsive storyteller, who also wrote the screenplay and co-produced with his wife, Emma Thomas, under their Syncopy banner, directed the movie.

In classic Nolan style, The Odyssey will break cinematic ground. It will be the first-ever adaptation of Homer’s epic to be shot with cutting-edge IMAX technology, guaranteeing an immersive experience for viewers around the globe.

To enhance its authenticity, the main scenes will be filmed on the Italian island of Favignana, in the province of Sicily, a location which is believed to have been the source of inspiration for part of Homer’s epic. The island, or “Goat Island,” is where Odysseus and his crew allegedly faced mythological obstacles. Production will commence next spring, transporting audiences directly into the world of ancient Greece.
