Friends of the Congo in collaboration with the People’s Forum, Black Star News, and the African Great Lakes Action Network invite you to an evening of film screening and discussion about the United States’ role in supporting authoritarian leaders in East and Central Africa. The evening will begin with a screening of “A Brilliant Genocide,” by Australian filmmaker Ebony Butler.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion. “A Brilliant Genocide,” documents the brutal fashion with which U.S. ally, Gen. Yoweri Museveni crushed the Acholi people in the northern part of Uganda under the guise of pursuing Joseph Kony of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA).

The panelists will delve into the underlying forces that have kept the oppressed masses of the Great Lakes Region of Africa –in Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, South Sudan — in a death trap for nearly three decades. A particular focus will be placed on the so-called “new breed” of African leaders or the “renaissance” leaders of Africa. During the Clinton Administration of the 1990s, President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Susan E. Rice dubbed a group of authoritarian leaders in Central and East Africa, the “new breed” of African leaders.

With the U.S. backing, these leaders invaded neighboring countries, were responsible for the death of millions of Africans, installed authoritarian regimes and escaped international sanction and accountability due to the political and diplomatic interference run by the United States. Most U.S. tax payers are not aware that their tax dollars have supported the mass killing of millions of Africans due to the financial, military, material and intelligence support provided to these countries by the United States.

The program is a call to conscience and a call to action for U.S. tax payers to hold their elected officials accountable by calling on them to cease the military, financial and diplomatic support to these rogue nations.

The forum is cosponsored by Safaru Yangu, Amnesty International Bronx Chapter, Africa in Harlem, Pan African Unity Dialogue, and Global Information Network. Please RSVP:
