The Girl With The Needle Review: A Gripping Tale of Horror and History

As winter slowly sets in all across the globe, we see various filmmakers taking advantage of the gloomy atmosphere and releasing movies revolving around the genre of horror and psychology. Based on a true-crime story, The Girl With The Needle is also one of the most horrifying and heart-wrenching stories delving deep into some of the most vulnerable themes like motherhood and the horrors of war. This article brings you a detailed The Girl With The Needle Review which will explain the pros and the cons of the movie and whether it is worth a watch or not.

The Girl With The Needle Review: About The Movie

The Girl With The Needle is a movie that originated in Denmark and revolves around the genres of history, psychology, and horror. The movie is a creation of Magnus von Horn and is based on the chilling true story of Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbye. The talented cast of the movie includes Vic Carmen Sonne, Trine Dyrholm, Avo Knox Martin, Tessa Hoder, Søren Sætter-Lassen, Joachim Fjelstrup, and Besir Zeciri. The plot of the movie revolves around a young and pregnant factory worker, Karoline, who takes up the position of a wet nurse for Dagmar, who supposedly runs an underground adoption agency, in order to support herself, but soon finds out the nightmare she unknowingly entered as she slowly realizes what Dagmar actually does with the “unwanted” babies.

Pros Of the Movie

The movie is set in post-World War I Denmark and the themes of the movie delve deep into the sufferings women had to go through after the war. It is an apt depiction of the pain and desperation of women who are forced to carry their pregnancy to term without any future plans or way of supporting themselves and their upcoming child. The dynamic formed between Dagmar and Karoline was interesting as well. The movie is definitely not an easy watch, and the performances by the actors, as well as the sharp cinematography, are what really captured the essence of horror. The black-and-white aesthetic really helped in recreating the post-war era, where poverty, desperation, and moral ambiguity prevailed.

The Girl With The Needle Review: Cons Of the Movie

The only drawback of the movie is the climax. The movie ends with Dagmar’s trial which raises many uncomfortable questions that are hard to address even in today’s day and age. The things that happened with Karoline throughout the movie and her journey reached a resolution but the emotional trauma lingers along with both the character and the audience. The movie is pretty unsettling, dark, and disturbing which makes it difficult to watch even for those who are used to watching the horror genre.

Worth The Watch?

The Girl With The Needle is a masterpiece of its own and if you can handle an extremely grim movie that delves deep into various unsettling themes and raises many uncomfortable questions, it is absolutely worth the watch.
