The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced Friday that it will be closing down by the end of January 2026, because of the the targeted defunding campaign of Donald Trump with the Congressional assistance of Republicans, who have claimed CPB was biased against conservatives.

CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison spoke about the their upcoming closing.

“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations,” said Harrison. “CPB remains committed to fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created when then President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967. The funding of the CPB was distributed to over 1,500 non-commercial radio and television public stations across the nation.

The announcement was given by CPB after passage of a federal rescissions package, along with the release of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s FY 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H) appropriations bill, which outlawed funding for CPB for the first time in over fifty years.

Since its founding, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting built a public media system that was largely trusted by the American people, because it performed a community service function. The CPB was a beacon of light which produced programs that informed and educated Americans about many things that were not covered by commercial media.

Friday, CPB informed employees that most of the staff positions will be ending by September 30. A smaller team will oversee the shutdown until the close of operations in January.

“Public media has been one of the most trusted institutions in American life, providing educational opportunity, emergency alerts, civil discourse, and cultural connection to every corner of the country,” Harrison said. “We are deeply grateful to our partners across the system for their resilience, leadership, and unwavering dedication to serving the American people.”
