The following statement was released by the The Africa Center’s CEO Uzodinma Iweala, shown above.

Dear Friends,

I greet you with hopes for your health and safety and encouragement to continue living each day of this challenging moment. Ramadan Kareem to those of you who are observing this holy month of Islam.

While we watch as leaders of nations across the world lift social distancing restrictions, the long-term implications of decisions made during this time are yet to be seen. With copious speculation on the ways in which the continent would be impacted by an uncontained spread, there is an important discussion to be had about the responses of African leadership both on the continent and the global stage. In the coming months, as we learn more about the implications of their decisions and the future of this virus, we intend to be part of and at the helm of this discussion, so stay tuned.

In April, we asked for ideas and suggestions on what you would like to see us produce during this period of physical distancing and digital congregation; we were pleased to receive several creative recommendations that we will continue to incorporate into our digital programming. We hope you enjoyed last month’s conversations with Dr. Njide Udochi, climate change activist Vanessa Nakate, William Kamkwaba and Chiwetel Ejiofor on The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and actress Uzo Aduba on her role as Shirley Chisholm in Mrs. America, all of which are available for replay on our website and social media platforms.

This month, we will have another slate of conversations with the most compelling voices of contemporary Africa and the Diaspora. Our first program will take place on Mother’s Day, May 10th, when I will have the distinct pleasure of speaking with my mother, former Nigerian Finance Minister and current World Health Organization Special Envoy for COVID-19, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala about African resilience in this unprecedented time. We have also put together a playlist on Spotify of some music we are listening to from across the continent. We hope you enjoy it!

Please support our friends at Teranga and Harlem Grown who are collaborating to provide hot, nutritious meals to children and families living in shelters in our Harlem community. You can donate to this initiative. Teranga remains open for delivery and pick-up on Caviar, DoorDash, Seamless, and UberEats from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Tuesday through Sunday.

Thank you for your commitment to our work at The Africa Center and to our future.

We look forward to seeing you online,

Uzodinma Iweala, M.D.

Chief Executive Officer, The Africa Center
