Nina Morrison Innocence Project: “We are thrilled that Felipe is finally cleared of this wrongful conviction…But amidst the joy of today’s exoneration, let’s not forget that Felipe’s wrongful conviction and imprisonment could well have been prevented if he’d received a fair trial at which the jury heard the evidence presented in court today.”

INNOCENCE PROJECT: RODNEY REED GIVEN STAY OF EXECUTION BY TEXAS COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS
[Mass Incarceration News\Rodney Reed]
Bryce Benjet, Mr. Reed’s Innocence Project attorney: “We are thankful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles have unanimously voted for a 120-day reprieve (before an indefinite stay was granted) of Mr. Reed’s execution. This time is critical to allow for proper consideration of the powerful new evidence of his innocence and possible DNA testing that could help prove who actually committed the crime. We hope that Governor Abbott will consider all of the facts in this case, and adopt the Board’s recommendation as soon as possible.”

BIPARTISAN SENATORS URGE TEXAS GOVERNOR ABBOTT TO STOP NOVEMBER 20TH EXECUTION OF RODNEY REED
[Criminal Justice News\Rodney Reed]
“Mr. Reed’s case recalls the sentiment then-Governor George W. Bush expressed in 1998 when he commuted the sentence against Henry Lee Lucas in the face of grave doubt about his guilt. ‘As a supporter of the death penalty . . . I feel a special obligation to make sure the State of Texas never executes a person for a crime they may not have committed,’ Bush said.”

IS TEXAS ABOUT TO EXECUTE RODNEY REED FOR A MURDER PERPETRATED BY A POLICE OFFICER?
[Criminal Justice\ Rodney Reed]
Bryce Benjet, senior staff attorney at the Innocence Project and Reed’s lead counsel: “It should be clear to anyone who looks at the evidence in this case that Mr. Reed did not commit the sexual assault or murder of Stacey Stites. To execute Mr. Reed would be a grave miscarriage of justice that will create irreparable damage to public confidence in the accuracy and fairness of the Texas criminal justice system.”

CENTRAL PARK FIVE, INNOCENCE PROJECT, AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADVOCATES PROMOTE PACKAGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORMS
[New York News\Criminal Justice Reform]
Yusef Salaam and Kevin Richardson (Central Park Five) in a joint statement: “In the coming months, we will intensely lobby the state legislature and the governor to enact these common-sense reforms before the end of the coming legislative session. Our state can no longer live with the fact that these techniques can be used to coerce false confessions from people. We will fight to ensure a tragedy like ours will never happen in this state again.”
