Monday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned about the rising body count, and humanitarian crisis, as fighting continues in Sudan.

The war between the Rapid Support Forces and the government of Sudan has led to the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.

In North Darfur State, in recent days, intense fighting has been reported particularly in the state capital of El Fasher. This follows on the violence which occurred previously in the vicinity of the Abu Shouk displacement camp, which now holds around 25,000 displaced people.

For a year now, a famine has been confirmed in the Zamzam camp, at El Fasher. Monday, Deputy UN Spokesperson Farhan Haq said, “Limited cash assistance continues, but it is nowhere near enough to meet rising needs.”

Cholera also continues to rampage through Darfur, with around 1,200 reported cases. Children amount for some 300 of the cases, in the Tawila region. In South Darfur, there are some 1,100 suspected cases, with 64 deaths, since the end of May, because “shortages of medical supplies, clean water and sanitation services are severely hampering the humanitarian response,” said Haq.

UNICEF says that the lives of over 640,000 children, under five-years-old, are now at risk from the continued violence, hunger and disease.
