NBA’s Adam Silver

Statement: The National NAACP has requested a meeting with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.

“The NAACP is eager to meet with Commissioner Silver to discuss the influence and impact of racism in the National Basketball Association,” stated Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors.  “The remarks attributed to Mr. Sterling remind us that racism and bigotry are still alive and well in all corners of society – including professional sports.”

Calls from all around the country have come in to our offices demanding that something be done about this situation. Members of our National Board of Directors insist that the NAACP and other civil rights groups work together to be part of reaching a solution.

Brock continued, “The harm inflicted by these comments has damaged the players, the fans and the NBA brand. We empathize with the athletes who are being asked to perform under these most difficult of circumstances. Our heart goes out to them and their families. We look forward to working with the NBA commissioner to examine how we can address these critical issues in a comprehensive way.”

The NAACP condemns the racist statements about African-Americans allegedly made by Clippers owner Donald Sterling. We are concerned about Mr. Sterling’s future role in the NBA and the need to reach a proper resolution of this matter–especially anything that might be construed to be a quick fix.

The NBA is set to report on its investigation into the alleged remarks later today. The NAACP will monitor the situation as it continues to unfold.
