Unemployment in South Africa rose for the second quarter in a row—and now stands at 33.2 percent.

South Africa’s unemployment is among the highest in the world. Other countries with high unemployment rates are: Eswatini, Djibouti, Palestine, Grenada, Botswana, Gabon, Namibia, Somalia, Libya, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jordan, Yemen, Lesotho, Iraq, and Montenegro.
The unemployment news in South Africa underscores the problems the coalition government has been having. In 2024, the ANC lost its parliamentary majority leading to a power-sharing agreement with the right-wing white Democratic Alliance Party. This coalition government is struggling to address the unemployment crisis.
The sectors hardest hit by unemployment are in agriculture, finances and the social services.
Younger South Africans are particularly hard-hit by unemployment. 46 percent of South Africans, under the age of 34, are unemployed.
The highest geographical regions to be hit by unemployment are said to be in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. It remains to be seen how South Africa’s unemployment rate will be affected by the 30 percent tariff imposed by the Trump Administration.
