Sharpton: Mamdani’s Mayoral Win Represents Idea That New York City Can “Be An Affordable City”

NEW YORK, NY (November 4, 2025) – Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement on Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the race for Mayor of New York City. Mayor-elect Mamdani’s victory comes just days after he addressed NAN membership at the House of Justice in Harlem, where he was introduced by Rev. Sharpton.

“Not since the election of Barack Obama in 2008 have voters been this energized or hopeful about a candidate. Mayor-elect Mamdani’s victory represented not only the belief in a single candidate but the idea that New York City can once again be an affordable city, especially for Black and Brown communities. We have watched for two decades as these vital communities have shrunk under the crushing weight of rising costs. Voters in every borough, in the highest numbers we have seen in more than 50 years, made a statement that enough is enough. I want to congratulate Mayor-elect Mamdani on this victory. He’s stood with the National Action Network long before he was hoping for the votes of our members, and we will continue to work together to ensure New York becomes an affordable place for Black and Brown Americans.

We must also stand together to confront the ongoing threats from the federal government as a result of this election. Donald Trump has teased everything from funding cuts to deploying the National Guard if voters did not bend to his will. That has been fueled by the ugly, deplorable Islamophobia that was ignited in the final weeks of this race. Everything we have seen in the first year of his second term makes it clear he has a target on New York City, his own hometown, to score himself some points with his eroding base. New York City cannot become a prop in Donald Trump’s fictionalized version of America, and we will work to ensure New York City as a whole stands up against these looming attacks.”
