2015 honoree Graça Machel enjoys light moment with late Nelson Mandela

Shared Interest will honor change makers for Southern Africa at their much-anticipated anniversary gala on April 7, 2016 at Espace in Manhattan.

Following on a thrilling 2015 gala with Graça Machel, widow of Nelson Mandela, and a moving 2014 gala with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the 2016 gala offers a stellar lineup.

Supported by cultural leaders such as Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover, the Shared Interest Gala will feature a 30th anniversary tribute to Artists United Against Apartheid (AUAA), which made the game-changing
song, Sun City. Many of the original participants plan to attend including: Ruben Blades; Nona Hendryx; Afrika Bambaataa; Jonathan Demme; producer Arthur Baker; and others to be announced.

Hosted by South African television’s legendary Felicia Mabuza-Suttle, this exciting evening featuring music, tributes, art and luminaries from around the world will come together to ensure the continuation
of Shared Interest’s transformative work in South Africa and honor our very special supporters: UN Women Executive Director and former South African Deputy President, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka;
Global Impact Investing Network’s Board Chair, Antony Bugg-Levine; and PepsiCo.

“Southern Africa is on the frontlines of change,” says Shared Interest Executive Director, Donna Katzin. “The change-makers Shared Interest will honor on April 7 embody this commitment to building
societies in which economically excluded communities, and especially their women, have a future and a voice.”

All will come together in New York on the evening of April 7, 2016, in support of Shared Interest, a decades-old South Africa-focused charity lauded by Nelson Mandela for helping “us consolidate our achievement of political democracy through socioeconomic development that makes a difference in the lives of ordinary people.”

This year’s major sponsors are: The Bergman Family, South African Airways, Prudential, Citi, Synergos and CUNY.

Artists, Supporters and Shared Interest Executive Director, Donna Katzin, will be available in the weeks leading up to the event for interviews.
