What is the Cold Harbor File?
Mark has been working on the Cold Harbor file since season 1. By the end of season 2, he finally completes it. Also, the Cold Harbor file includes “scary numbers”. It represents Gemma’s different emotions. These emotions come from her being experimented on in Lumon’s basement. Mark discovers that these numbers align with Kier Eagan’s “Four Tempers”. These are woe, frolic, malice, and dread.
Mark taps into Gemma’s feelings and emotions as he engages with these numbers. Each time he organizes a set of numbers; it creates a new consciousness for Gemma. By the end of the season, her mind splits into 24 different parts. Mark manages to prevent a 25th consciousness from forming. This was Lumon’s final goal.
Gemma’s Struggle
Throughout the season, Gemma undergoes a terrifying journey in the Cold Harbor room. Lumon forces her to take apart a baby crib she and Mark had planned to use. This action is especially painful as they have experienced a miscarriage. It represents the emotional toll of her forced separation from Mark. This is also their part of a family.
Mark and his outie’s collaboration ultimately saves Gemma. Together, they devise a plan to rescue her from the oppressive environment of Lumon. Mark’s determination to bring her back shows how deeply he cares for her.

The Mystery of the Goats
Goats play a significant role in this season. In Season 1, goats make a brief appearance. But, Season 2 dives deeper into their connection to Lumon. Mark and Helly discover a room called “Mammalians and Nurturable”. This is where the goats reside. The goats are involved in a dark practice. The innie test subject is murdered after the completion of the file. Then, the goats are sacrificed as a way to guide the subject’s spirit to Kier.
A goat named Emilie serves as a spirit guide. This is for Gemma in this chilling scenario. Also, Mark successfully saves both Gemma and the goat. This adds a glimmer of hope amidst the stark horror of Lumon’s practices.
The Love Triangle: Mark, Gemma and Helly
Mark’s choice between Gemma and Helly drives the emotional core of the season. He learns that “outie” Mark wants to end his severance. Also, he wants to reconnect with Gemma. This is at the expense of his relationship with Helly. This revelation comes as a blow to “innie” Mark.
Therefore, Mark manages to rescue Gemma from the Cold Harbor room. However, they must return to the severed floor to escape. There, they must revert to their “innie” personas. Also, Mark faces a difficult decision. He either has to choose to live with Gemma or Helly. Thus, he decides to stay with Helly and leave Gemma. This is a heartbreaking moment in the show. The finale ends with Mark and Helly holding hands and running away together. This is while Gemma cries on the other side of the door. She pleads for Mark to come with her.
Moreover, Cold Harbor represents Lumon’s disturbing practices. It shows their micro-managing consciousness. Harmony Kobel explains that these rooms are essentially Gemma’s mind. The Cold Harbor accounts signal an integral moment in her fate.
