Reporting from Senegal points to an alleged emerging power struggle between the president and prime minister that may negatively impact the country current economic crisis.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko (above) accused President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in a July 10th speech, of not defending him from attacks, particularly after Sonko was convicted for defamation.

Sonko appears to believe he is being betrayed by the president. Faye is considered a political protégé of Sonko. Some say Faye owes his win as president to Sonko. The rift is considered to be a major problem for the forward movement of the Senegalese government.

Prime Minister Sonko also reportedly claimed that his authority was being limited by President Faye.

Senegal was recently downgraded by credit rating agency S&P. IMF support has also evaporated.

The Francophone West African country also faces rising borrowing costs after a recent audit reportedly showed the finances to be in a worst state than was previously presumed.

President Faye was one of five African heads of state that recently traveled to Washington for a summit to discuss trade with the Trump Administration.
