Late Friday afternoon, Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued a joint statement calling on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to step down amid a still growing sex scandal.
This follows yesterday’s announcement by New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie who issued a statement saying that an impeachment investigation into the Governor had been officially launched.
New York Attorney General Letitia has already launched a separate investigation into the allegations.
Schumer and Gillibrand cited the “multiple, credible” accusers in their decision to ask Cuomo to resign.
“Confronting and overcoming the Covid crisis requires sure and steady leadership,” Schumer and Gillibrand said. “We commend the brave actions of the individuals who have come forward with serious allegations of abuse and misconduct,” they continued. “Due to the multiple, credible sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, it is clear that Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners and the people of New York. Governor Cuomo should resign.”
The call from Schumer and Gillibrand came after Governor Cuomo held a press conference earlier in the afternoon where he continued to deny that he did anything wrong.
This happened as a seventh accuser, reporter Jessica Bakeman, late Friday morning wrote an article in the New York Intelligencer.
This follows the recent “groping” allegations from an anonymous current staffer who works for Cuomo.
The Governor has also been accused of sexual impropriety by: Lindsey Boylan, Charlotte Bennett, Ana Liss, Karen Hinton, and Anna Ruch.
The calls coming from high-profile Democrats asking Governor Cuomo to step down have been increasing in recent days.
