Launching: The International Decade for People of African Descent

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution “to strengthen national, regional, and international action and cooperation in relation to the full enjoyment of economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights by People of African Descent and their full and equal participation in all aspects of society.”

“The International Decade for People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development” will begin on January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2024. and will include programs, events, and educational fora throughout the world.

The December 12th Movement International Secretariat, will launch the decade with a tribute to phenomenal saxophonist and African cultural artist Rene McLean on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:30 PM, at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Boulevard, Harlem, New York.

Randy Weston, acclaimed pianist in “African Rhythms” will be the Master of Ceremonies of this historic celebration. Musical Director for the event, renown saxophonist T.K. Blue, has assembled a wonderful cast of musicians, vocalists, poets, and cultural artists to perform. Many national and international political, academic, clergy, and literary dignitaries will be in attendance.

The launching of this decade will advance and strengthen African peoples’ resolve to repair, reclaim and seek compensation for the theft and exploitation of not only our labor, but our culture “an intellectual property right.”
