Tonight, writer David Wallace-Wells will be speaking, at Revolution Books, about his New York Times bestselling book “The Unimaginable Earth: Life After Warming.” The event starts at 7: p.m. Revolution Books is located at 437 Malcolm X Blvd and 132nd Street. Take #2 or #3 train to 135 Street.

In his much-anticipated book, Wallace-Wells brings into focus the impending food and water shortages, rising sea levels displacing tens of millions of people, and the real danger of much of the planet becoming inhospitable to life. He points to the role of the reigning economic and political structures in this crisis. And he shows that the responsibility to act and avoid catastrophe falls on a single generation.

“If we could wish a solution into place by imagination, we’d have solved the problem already…. Something a lot bigger and more concrete than imagination [is required] — it means nothing short of a complete overhaul of the world’s energy systems, transportation, infrastructure and industry and agriculture.” — David Wallace-Wells

Three facts from The Uninhabitable Earth:

— More than half of all the carbon ever pumped into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels has occurred in the past 30 years — since the publication of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.

— There could be anywhere from 200 million to 1 billion climate refugees by 2050.

— 100 million more people are likely to be reckoning with malaria by 2030, a direct result of climate change.
