Thursday, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement in response to the ongoing violence in Cameroon.

“This week, a video of alleged separatists in Cameroon brutally killing a woman has been circulating widely. While this video has not been verified, it does highlight the ongoing insecurity and violence in the predominantly Anglophone Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon. Just last week, a Cameroonian humanitarian worker was killed in the Northwest Region.

“I am deeply concerned by the escalation of crimes against civilians. There are far too many incidents where innocent civilians are being killed due to the conflict between separatists who want an independent Anglophone state, and the Cameroonian government forces. There also seems to be an escalation of crimes against women. I urge the Government of Cameroon and the separatist leaders to help stop crimes against civilians, and for the government to investigate this matter and all other transgressions thoroughly. The culprits must be brought to justice immediately.

“The conflict in the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon must end and I encourage all parties to come to the table to negotiate an end to this conflict.”
