New York, NY – In honor of their 25th Anniversary, Reel Sisters Film Festival (https://reelsisters.org/) will premiere two films on November 5: Gro Up (world premiere) and Take Me Home (Harlem premiere). Gro Up and Take Me Home were both winners of the Reel Sisters Micro Budget Film Fellowship. The fellowship offers creators an opportunity to produce the pilot for a web series or a short film. Winners were awarded $5,000.
The festival will also celebrate with the season’s official movie selections, Chico Virtual and Bria.
Gro Up: Produced by Camille Simone Thomas, Directed by Nina Lucia Rodriguez, Written by Camille Simone Thomas, Nina Lucia Rodriguez and Jasmine Sharma. This 13-minute film features Ollie, BK, and Carmichael, three girls who, when given the opportunity to stay locked up in juvie or to “gro up” they decide to spend the summer sifting through soil and their own personal shit.

Take Me Home: Produced by Minos Papas, directed and written by Liz Sargent. This 16-minute film features Anna, a young Asian-American woman with an Intellectual Disability. When her mother becomes unresponsive, Anna must turn to her sister in New York for help. The two sisters navigate their grief and miscommunication, the dysfunctional Florida health system, and a difficult move away from the only home Anna has ever known. Amidst this uncertainty, Anna has to hold her own and make her voice heard.
Chico Virtual: Produced by Tom Sidi and Ori Chevio, directed and written by Olivia De Camps. This 14-minute long film features a boy who must come to terms with the harsh reality of his immigrant status when his brother alarmingly doesn’t come home.
Bria: Produced, written and directed by Ophilia Davis. This 7-minute long narrative features a non-verbal autistic woman named Bria, living with Asperger’s syndrome. Bria comes across a yellow object seen in an unknown garden. Suddenly curious, Bria steps out of her comfort zone to explore the unknown, where she is given a chance to experience the authenticity of nature in her own autistic world.
Tickets to the event can be purchased online for $12 ($8 – seniors/students with valid I.D.). Virtual Tickets are $5 a section.

Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series is the first Academy Qualifying Festival for Short narratives devoted to showcasing films produced, directed and written by women of color. The festival accepts all genres and formats with a special interest in submissions from animated and web series producers. Films co-directed, co-produced or co-written with a male filmmaker are eligible for submission. Reel Sisters is rated top three in Film Daily’s 10 best internationally recognized women centered film festivals.
