Push For Barron Bill Seeking To End Secret Grand Juries In Police Shooting Cases

Charles and Inez Barron

On Monday, August 17, 2015 at 12 Noon on the steps of City Hall, Assemblyman Charles Barron and Councilwoman Inez Barron will be joined by supporters of Assemblymember Barron’s bill (A.8364) calling for the barring of grand juries in the prosecution process in the case of police killings.

Assemblymember Barron’s bill will be a bill similar to the bill recently passed by the California State Legislature, and signed by Governor Jerry Brown. Senator Holly Mitchell was the sponsor of the bill in the Senate and Assemblyman Bill Quirk was the sponsor of the bill in the Assembly in the Sacramento California Legislature.

Assemblymember Barron’s bill will bring transparency and a public viewing of the indictment process of police officers when involved in the use of deadly force.

Assemblymember Barron says: “Although it is said that a prosecutor can get an indictment in the grand jury on a ham sandwich, it is very rare and unlikely that they will indict police officers when they kill innocent civilians, as in the case of Michael Brown in Ferguson, an unarmed black man killed by a white police officer and Eric Gamer here in New York, an unarmed black man killed by white police officers. These police killings are overwhelmingly and disproportionately occurring in black and brown communities. No more secret grand juries in cases of police killings, let the public view the process.”
