The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will have a public reading of Special counsel Jack Smith’s most recent federal indictment of former President Donald Trump. The reading will take place Monday, August 14, 2023, 5:00pm, City Hall, 920 Broad Street in Newark, New Jersey.
“Former President Donald Trump was indicted in connection with his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and role in the violent January 6th attack on the Capitol,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.  “The indictment is so significant that we felt the need to do something extraordinary to educate people about what Trump is alleged to have done, reveal the gravity of the allegations against him, and underscore what an extraordinary occurrence this is in American history.”
“We felt the best way to do this was to have a reading of the actual indictment against Trump, all 45 pages of it, in the public square. We hope that by doing this it will inspire others to read the indictment for themselves,” Hamm said.  “The seriousness of this indictment cannot be overstated. Never before has an impeached president who lost an election tried to overturn that election in order to keep himself in power. We have never come so close to dictatorship before.”
“Every person In this country should not only be concerned about this but should demand that Trump and all those who conspired with him be held accountable and brought to justice,” Hamm said.
On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, Special counsel Jack Smith announced that former President Donald Trump had been indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts related to efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
In the indictment Trump was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, witness tampering, conspiracy against the rights of citizens, and obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding.
In his announcement Special counsel Jack Smith encouraged people to read the entire indictment,” Hamm said.  “At the event we will have about ten individuals each read several pages of the indictment. In this way we hope to get through the entire document in a relative short period of time.”
POP has been a long-time opponent of the former president. The group opposed and protested his candidacy, and held marches calling for his removal while he was in office.
The event is open to the public. For directions and other information call the People’s Organization For Progress at (973)801-0001.
