Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association Announces Free Screening Of Documentary ‘The Sun Rises In The East’

The Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association(PLGNA) invites you to join us for a free screening of one of the most compelling documentaries in recent times—The Sun Rises in The East:

Date: Thursday, June 27th
Time: 6-8 PM
Place: Church of The Evangel, 1950 Bedford Ave., between Winthrop and Hawthorne

The films screening will be followed by a Q&A led by Dr. Segun Shabaka, who appears in the documentary discussing his role as a member of The East, a pan-African organization and cultural center located in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn from 1969 to the 1980s.

Dr. Shabaka remains committed to community building and is the board chairman and chief
organizer for the International African Arts Festival (IAAF), which is attended by ten of
thousands of people each year since it began more than five decades ago.

➢ Find out how a group of young activists was able to successfully establish daycare and accredited school that emphasized cultural pride as well as providing a supportive and rigorous curriculum.

➢ Why they were one of the major Black Power and Pan African organizations in the US.

➢ How they were able to confront local, national, and international social justice issues.
