Police Killings of Unarmed Black Men: Revolutionaries Call for Taking Grief and Anger Over the Bridge to Staten Island

What: Press conference calling for march for justice for Eric Garner and Mike Brown over the Verranzano-Narrows Bridge

Who: Carl Dix and Travis Morales issuing a call for action

When: August 12, Tuesday, 1:00 PM

Where: One Police Plaza

Everybody saw it. NYPD cops choked the life from Eric Garner as he strained to get out the words: “I can’t breathe,” again and again. Now the Mayor is telling us that protesting this foul murder “Could Tear This City Apart,” and local labor and political leaders are saying that militant protest wouldn’t “serve the progressive agenda.”

Progressive agenda? What is it, and what is it worth if it is advanced on the basis of police killing Black men, and jail guards brutalizing prisoners on Rikers Island, and not being punished? How can there be any racial healing if the powers that be can tell us how, when and where we can protest?

Carl Dix and Travis Morales, two revolutionaries who have been leaders in the fight against the brutality and murder the criminal “injustice” system in this country has enforced on Black and Latino people since the 1970’s, will issue a call for a march across the Verranzano-Narrows Bridge into Staten Island on Saturday, August 16.

This march will raise the demands:

·         Justice for Eric Garner and Michael Brown!

·         Indict the Killer Cops!

·         Stop the Repression of the Witnesses!

·         Bratton and “Broken Windows” Must Go Now!

·         All Out for the October Month of Resistance to Mass Incarceration, Police Terror, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation!

Carl Dix is a long-time revolutionary leader and a representative of the Revolutionary Communist Party; and is a regular contributor to Revolution www.revcom.us  In 1970 he was part of the Fort Lewis 6, the largest mass refusal by active duty soldiers for orders to Vietnam.

For this stand he spent two years at Fort Leavenworth Military Penitentiary.   Carl co-founded the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation in 1996. In 2011, along with Dr. Cornel West, Carl co-initiated a civil disobedience campaign to stop the NYPD’s illegitimate, racist policy and practice of “Stop-and-Frisk.”

Carl is currently spearheading national efforts to make the month of October 2014 a Month of Resistance to Mass Incarceration, Police Terror, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation.

Travis Morales is a long time revolutionary communist. In 1978/79, he was one of the Moody Park 3 Defendants, facing 140 years in prison on charges of felony riot in Houston, Texas, after police killed an unarmed man.  In 1987, he led the founding of La Resistencia in Houston.  La Resistencia built resistance to all attacks on all immigrants, militarization of the border, raids and deportations, detention of Haitian refugees, and the targeting of Arab, Muslim and South Asian immigrants for secret detention and deportation after September 11.
