The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will register voters tomorrow which is the last day to do so in New Jersey for the upcoming election in November. It will conduct voter registration on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 3:00pm to 5:00pm on the corner of Broad and Market Streets (near 777 Broad Street) in Newark, New Jersey.

POP is a grassroots volunteer organization working for racial, social, and economic justice. It has been doing voter registration on Saturdays for the past eight months since March.

“Normally, we do voter registration on the weekend. However, because the election on November 5th is so important we decided to come out tomorrow to give people one last opportunity to get registered,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.

“After tomorrow’s registration deadline we are going to switch gears and engage in activities and efforts to educate voters about the election, especially who is running, the offices they are running for, important related issues, and what’s at stake,” Hamm said.

“In the final days before the election we are going to turn our attention to voter mobilization. Registering and educating voters are very important. However, if they don’t go to the polls and vote then it was all for nothing,” he said.

“All of us, both organizations and individuals, that have been doing voter registration must do everything that we can to get the folks that we have registered to go to the polls on Election Day. We can’t sit this one out. The cost of not participating is too high,” he said.

“After this election is over we must work on reforming our voter registration system. One of the needed reforms is same day registration. There shouldn’t be a registration cut-off date. People should be able to register on Election Day,” Hamm said.

“The way we are doing it now, the way we have been doing it for more than one hundred years is antiquated and should be changed. We have the ability, technology, information, and systems in place that will allow the implementation of this reform,” he said.

“Many people don’t think about going to vote until Election Day, and then they don’t go because they aren’t registered. Same day registration will make it possible for them to vote. This will increase voter participation and that will be good for the democratic process,” he said.

“Same day registration is not a new idea. The nation’s capital Washington, DC and twenty-three states have it. I call upon our state representatives to pass legislation to make it a reality in New Jersey and the rest of the nation,” he said.
