Pennsylvania Moves to Legalize Recreational Marijuana in 2025

Pennsylvania is up to legalizing recreational Marijuana to regulate its sales and control public health concerns. In the neighboring state of Pennsylvania, this act is already legalized, which has affected the internal sales of Marijuana significantly in the state.  Thus, the Cannabis Health and Safety Act was passed in the House of Representatives to convert a statement into a law. On Monday, this bill was passed for approval and has moved to the full state House of Representatives for approval.

Who Petitioned for the Cannabis Health and Safety Act?

The Cannabis Health and Safety Act was proposed by the state representative Rick Krajewski and the state representative Dan Frankel. The main motive to keep this bill on the representative’s table is to deal with safe and tested products of Cannabis for the people who are using Marijuana, but are going to buy it from neighboring states due to the legalized supply of the products in their state.  The governor of the parliament (Gov. Josh Shapiro) also agrees with the notion due to the potential revenue collection that legal marijuana can bring, and take care of the safety concerns for the public.

What is the Cannabis Health and Safety Act?

This act states the legalization of Marijuana, i.e., regulating the sales of Marijuana legally. This suggests that just like liquor, Marijuana will be available to the dealers for sale in the inspection of the state. The state can collect taxes on Marijuana sales, which will eventually benefit the state. Two budget plans have been proposed for legalizing Marijuana till now. The first one says 20% taxes on Marijuana, which could generate a sales revenue of about $11.4 million. On the other hand, the second proposal suggests that a 12% + 6% sales tax on Cannabis products could be imposed. It would likely generate some $1.1 billion or more if implemented correctly.

The responsibility of managing the Cannabis stores will be given to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. Techniques like licensing and contracting will be used to ensure legal sales of Marijuana in the state. The act also intends to provide justice to all those stakeholders who were affected due to Cannabis related criminal issues. In addition, a fine will be charged for any underage (i.e., below 21 years) consumption of Marijuana.

Conclusion

The Cannabis Health and Safety Act is going to prove useful for the state as it not only deals with health and safety concerns but also deals with the illegal dealing of Marijuana within the state. This ensures transparency and also restricts the consumption of the substance in the state. However, the use of these substances can never lead to benefits in the long run. People should not be consuming these products. But as we cannot control the demands of the public, regulated and controlled consumption can be taken care of.
