How To Play NYT Connections

For the uninitiated, Connections is a daily word puzzle from The New York Times. The goal? Group 16 seemingly unrelated words into four categories of four. These connections can be based on anything—synonyms, themes, pop culture references, or wordplay. You get four chances to make mistakes, so tread carefully!

Each group has a color:

  • Yellow – Easiest
  • Green – Easy to moderate
  • Blue – Tricky
  • Purple – Usually the hardest, often involves wordplay

Today’s Solving Experience

This puzzle had just the right level of variety to keep things fresh. Personally, the blue group jumped out to me. “ONE WEEK” is unmistakably a 1998 classic from Barenaked Ladies (anyone else still rattle off those rapid-fire lyrics?), and “CLOSING TIME” immediately locked in the timeframe. That gave away IRIS and TOO CLOSE shortly after.

The green category was the easiest: from SCOOP to LITTLE SPOON, it practically scooped itself into place. After all, we’ve all stared longingly into an ice cream counter before.

The yellow group took a second longer. POINT OF VIEW helped me crack that one open, and LENS soon followed. Finally, the purple group—“hot” wordplay—felt like a fun finale. HOT DOG and HOT POTATO are classics, but HOT ROD and HOT WATER BOTTLE sealed the deal.
