It’s Saturday morning, January 25th, 2025, and another chilly day again. I am back into the New York Times’ fascinating puzzle game NYT Connections. Armed with morning coffee and my determination to keep the streak of winning going, I open today’s puzzle. It displays sixteen words: the goal was to identify four groups of four words sharing some kind of common connection.
Lineup today is: Ginkgo, Slope, Emoji, Angle, Dent, Tycoon, Recess, Mogul, Lodge, Lunch, Pod, Karaoke, Class, Cycle, Lift, and Home Room. In one glimpse, they looked like just a word collection with no relevance in life; but now, I’m all set to dig up these deep, secret links of their meaning.
Connection from First
Immediately, I see the familiar pattern: Lunch, Recess, Home Room, and Class. These words scream to me “school periods,” and straight away, I have my first group. It’s a pretty simple start, and I am confident.
Next, I see Mogul and Tycoon archetypal combination of two mighty names. But what other two words can be paired with this combination? It’s not easy to guess and I put it aside for now.

Unraveling Wordplay and Mistakes
The word Emoji stands out. I’m starting to think if there is any very smart wordplay. Is it connected to some similar-sounding words? My brain is running a mile, trying to connect these things, but nothing’s coming yet. Meanwhile, I’m being just a little too cocky and getting a bit too arrogant. Remember, it is here that people make mistakes.
I shift my attention to words such as Karaoke and Pod. Are they connected with social activities or maybe abstract concepts? There is a good chance of this, but still, no obvious revelation.
I start examining the words associated with Ski:
Words that spring to mind are Ski Lodge, Ski Slope, and Ski Lift. Do these words make up a set? They appear to fall under the domain of skiing, but I can’t seem to think of the final word. My head leaps to the word Ski Mogul—no, that can’t be it! Wait a minute, what about Ski Angle, Ski Tycoon, and so on? Too many options are swirling around, so I will go with my instincts.
The Final Push and Reflection
This is the final attempt. My head is filled with pressure since there is one chance left to go. Again, I recall Tycoon and Mogul from simulation games: Roller Coaster Tycoon and Railroad Tycoon, to name two. Karaoke doesn’t belong, but anything can happen when there’s just one guess.
As I tentatively make my final guesses, I realize I’ve missed some really important connections. The puzzle reveals its solutions: features of a ski resort, words derived from Japanese, and words with the prefix “tri.” I feel humbled by the complexity of the game and the cleverness of its design.
A Humbling Experience
Today’s puzzle was a reminder of the importance of humility and keeping an open mind. I got caught up in the excitement and missed some important clues. But that’s the beauty of Connections—it’s a game that challenges and surprises you at every turn.
As I continue to reflect, I appreciate the many like-minded persons who share similar passion for doing puzzles. It will be tomorrow once more, taking another round to see what to expect and understand the lessons learned today.
