The NYPD held an unveiling to honor two fallen officers who were killed in the line of duty 50 years ago today.

Patrolmen Waverly Jones & Joseph Piagentini were shot and killed while on foot patrol in the Colonial Park Houses in Manhattan on May 21, 1971. The two officers were ambushed by members of the Black Liberation Army as they were making their way to their cruiser.

Patrolman Jones had served New York City Police Department for five years and was assigned to the 32nd Precinct. He was survived by his wife and three children.

The BLA was responsible for the murders of more than 10 police officers around the country. They were also responsible for violent attacks around the country that left many police officers wounded.

On Friday, members of the 32nd Precinct gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the fallen officers with street signs named in their honor. The street signs were placed outside the Harlem precinct where the two officers worked.

The families of both slain officers attended the anniversary with somber remembrance.

Anthony Bottom, one of the men convicted in the shooting deaths of the two officers, was granted parole last year.

In three years, 16 cop killers in New York have been set free.
