NEW YORK – Following Mayor Adams’ meeting with President Elect Donald Trump’s border czar and his subsequent apparent willingness to help Trump’s deportation machine, the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) issued the following statement, attributable to Executive Director Donna Lieberman:
“Mayor Adams’s apparent willingness to help Trump’s deportation machine is wrong, a waste of resources, and will hurt New Yorkers.”
“Adams is manufacturing a fake, sensationalist public safety crisis. In reality, as city data shows and the Mayor has bragged, public safety is actually improving, even with the increase in new arrivals. Attempts to erode the city’s sanctuary laws will just break trust between immigrant communities and city agencies, pushing more people away from services that are essential for their health and safety.”
“Our city has had sanctuary policies on the books since Ed Koch’s administration in 1989 to protect our immigrant friends, loved ones, and neighbors. Adams flirting with the idea of undermining well-established law is political posturing that caters to Trump’s cruelty. New York City’s sanctuary laws cannot be danced around — they must be affirmed unambiguously.”
