Mayor de Blasio today announced the acceleration of capital funding within the City’s affordable housing plan. This decision, which will shift $466 million to the current fiscal year’s capital budget to address affordable housing needs, will play a significant role in the city’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

In response, the New York State Association for Affordable Housing (NYSAFAH), which represents hundreds of member firms that collectively manage tens of thousands of affordable homes statewide, released the following statement from its president and CEO, Jolie Milstein:

“The decision today to restore the Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s capital budget for Fiscal Year 2021 reaffirms the city’s commitment to addressing the affordable housing crisis. The reductions, had they stood, would have prevented the construction of thousands of affordable homes and slowed our economic recovery. With more New Yorkers than ever experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity, it is encouraging to see City Hall step up and say clearly that help is on the way.”

Ahead of the final presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden, Milstein also said the following:

“Tonight’s debate presents the final opportunity for both candidates to publicly discuss the dire housing crisis facing our nation. To date, neither campaign has taken the opportunity to introduce a comprehensive housing plan addressing long term rent relief, evictions, mortgage forbearance, and affordable housing development and preservation. We hope they do so as stable housing is the lynchpin for economic stability, healthy living, and educational success.”
