Today, NYC Council Member Inez Barron tested positive for COVID-19.

New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson released the following statement:

“Council Member Inez Barron today notified the Council that she tested positive for COVID-19. Her husband, Assembly Member Charles Barron, had previously tested positive for the virus. Council Member Barron had already self-isolated as a precaution, as did her staff. Her District Office is closed but continuing to conduct operations via telecommuting.

Council Member Barron is the second member of the Council to announce they tested positive. Council Member Ritchie Torres announced his positive test on Tuesday, March 17. The Council has notified Council Members so they can let their staff know so that proper precautions can be taken.

We have informed the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), which will continue its ongoing additional cleaning measures in City Hall and 250 Broadway. The Council’s City Hall and 250 Broadway offices have been closed since Monday, March 16.

“I join each and every one of my colleagues in praying for the speedy recovery of our friend and colleague Inez and her husband Charles. Inez has served the people of Brooklyn with distinction for years and I am certain she cannot wait to get back to work on behalf of her constituents.”
