NEW YORK CITY – In response to reporting Wednesday that NYPD Commissioner Sewell will weaken the department’s disciplinary guidelines, New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman issued the following statement:

“Commissioner Sewell’s boast that she has thwarted CCRB recommendations more than any recent predecessor is no badge of honor – it is a stark symbol that this administration isn’t serious about police accountability. Her stated plans to weaken the department’s disciplinary matrix will destroy what confidence New Yorkers have in the NYPD, and she is signaling that officers who engage in misconduct will be shielded from real repercussions.

“At the same time as the Adams administration is calling for increased police involvement in ever more needs facing the city, they are moving to water down any meaningful oversight. That is a recipe for abuse.”
