Newark: Martin Luther King March on Saturday

The People’s Organization For Progress annual Martin Luther King march will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2021, 12:00 noon beginning at the Lincoln Statue, 12 Springfield Avenue, in Newark, New Jersey.

The march is being held to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which is January 15th. The King holiday is the following Monday. “We are marching against racism and fascism and to uphold the ideals for which Dr. King stood,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress, said. “We are asking everyone outraged by the racist white supremacist terrorist attack on the Capitol and attempted fascist coup to march with us.”

The theme of this year’s march is “The People Are Suffering: Martin Luther King March For Racial And Economic Justice.” The Lincoln statue is located at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and West Market Street.

Among the speakers at the march will be representatives of grassroots organizations including Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress. Participants planning to attend are asked to wear face masks and gloves and to practice social distancing at the march.
