The Justice For Carl Dorsey & Stop Police Brutality Rally will be held Monday, January 1, 2024, 12:00 noon, at City Hall, 920 Broad Street in Newark, NJ. The rally is sponsored by the People’s Organization For Progress (POP).
The purpose of the rally is to draw attention to the case of Carl Dorsey, killed by Rod Simpkins, a Newark police detective, three years ago. Mr Dorsey was killed January 1, 2021 in Newark, New Jersey. The rally will mark the second anniversary of his death.
Speaking at the event will be members of Carl Dorsey’s family, the family members of other police brutality victims, and community activists.
The People’s Organization For Progress together with members of the Dorsey family demanded a federal investigation into Mr Dorsey’s death.
“Mr Dorsey was unarmed when he was shot and killed by that Newark detective. This was a grave injustice,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress stated.  “We believed Mr Dorsey’s civil rights were violated and last year we called upon the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey to launch an investigation.” Hamm
A meeting with the U.S. Attorney and his staff was held in April and we were told that Mr Dorsey’s case was under review,” Hamm added.
Robert Tarver, the attorney representing members of Mr Dorsey’s family has filed a civil rights lawsuit in federal court on their behalf.
POP is also calling for the passage of bills in the New Jersey State Legislature that would allow Newark and other municipalities to establish police review boards with subpoena power.
“Perhaps if police review boards had been established when people demanded them years ago the deaths of Mr Dorsey and other police brutality victims could have been avoided,” Hamm said.
