New York City’s Public Advocate Jumaane Williams released the following statement following Thursday’s tragic fire in Brooklyn, where at least 6 people were killed:

“I’m heartbroken for the families who lost loved ones in this morning’s fire on 58th Street, where six of our neighbors lost their lives. I pray for them, for the healing of everyone injured, and for the Sunset Park community as it grieves. I’m grateful to the firefighters and EMS personnel who responded in the middle of the night, and hoping for a full and fast recovery of the firefighters hurt while protecting others.

“I’m also thankful that the Red Cross is helping displaced residents find temporary shelter. As the FDNY works to determine the cause of this tragic blaze, the city must make sure those New Yorkers have a safe place to stay in the weeks ahead and the support they need to get back on their feet. My office stands ready to help affected families connect with those resources.”
