TRENTON – The following statements are from Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV and Kelly Knutson, Director, Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed regarding approval by the Senate Budget Committee of Senate Bill 1530, which requires state and county hazard mitigation plans to include climate change-related threat assessments in hazard prevention and mitigation strategies.

“We know for certain that New Jersey is feeling the effects of climate change, and we must adopt our disaster plans to account for this reality. This year’s flooding, wildfires, extreme heat, and tornadoes are signs that we can no longer wait to take action. This lifesaving legislation will protect our families and businesses by requiring emergency rescue plans to account for more intense storms from climate change,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director, New Jersey LCV. “This is a step in the right direction, especially for those in our most vulnerable communities. We commend Senator Greenstein for sponsoring this urgent legislation and call on the Senate to quickly take up the bill for a full vote to make our communities much safer from climate change impacts.”

“Incorporating climate change considerations into New Jersey’s State Hazard Mitigation Plan, as outlined in Senate Bill No. 1530, holds immense importance not just for the Garden State, but for the entire Delaware River Watershed,” said Kelly Knutson, Director, Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed. “By mandating comprehensive assessments and strategies to address climate-related hazards, this legislation serves as a vital blueprint for the region’s resilience. It’s about safeguarding our critical infrastructure and keeping our communities secure. We look forward to our continued work with New Jersey LCV as we push for strategies that make our environment safer and stronger for everyone.”
