Yonkers, NY.—American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten will lead a national delegation to Saunders Trades and Technical High School Wednesday to highlight its world-leading career pathway programs that prepare hundreds of students each year for life and college.
The head of the 1.7-million-member union will lift up Saunders’ unique model of vocational and academic instruction that provides students with skills for employment and academic preparation for college. Students major in one of ten technical, vocational or occupational programs, while participating in academic classes, taking Regents exams and college prep courses.
Courses include the occupational fields of Culinary Arts, Graphics Design, Cosmetology & Barbering, Fashion Design, the vocational fields of Automotive Technology, Heating & Air Conditioning and Construction Technology, and the technical fields of Architecture, Biology & Chemical Technology, Electronic & Computer Circuitry.
In addition to Saunders’ CTE programs, Weingarten will spotlight the Yonkers Federation of Teachers-created “Take A Look at Teaching” Program at nearby Roosevelt High School-Early College Studies, which encourages current students to pursue a future career as an educator in the district.
The tour is a part of the AFT’s yearlong, $5 million, “Real Solutions for Kids and Communities” campaign. While some extremists try to politicize schools, Real Solutions highlights and celebrates the programs kids need to recover and thrive.
