The Texas for All Coalition, along with national partners and state organizations, have announced a Saturday Aug. 16th National Day of Action marches to protest Donald Trump’s authoritarian federalizing takeover, not just in Washington D.C., but his goal of doing so across America. Reportedly, NBC will be providing coverage.

Texas Democrats fled the state, to deny Texas Republicans a quorum, in an effort to stop them from implementing Trump’s gerrymandering rigging scheme, which, if implemented, would give Republicans five more Congressional seats.

Many realize that if Trump and Texas Republicans are successful in gerrymandering the Texas map, before the 2026 mid-term, that similar political ploys will be forthcoming in other red states.

The organizers of the National Day of Action marches say they have set up a fight Trump website to encourage national mass mobilization against Trump.

Texas will start the National Day of Action with a rally at the Capitol in Austin. Several people involved in the planning of the Saturday’s National Day of Action spoke about what is now at stake with the rising authoritarianism of Trump.

“Washington wants to rig Texas’ congressional maps because they know they can’t run on their record of raising costs, cutting taxes for the rich, and special treatment for elites. We, the people, are fighting back,” said Rep. Gene Wu, the chair of the Texas House Democrats. “The incredible support we’re seeing — not just back home in Texas, but from Democrats, Republicans, and independents across the country — proves this fight is bigger than any one state. We’re defending our entire country from the Trump Takeover, and I’m honored to stand with every patriotic American who refuses to let extremists rig the system.”

“Across Texas, and across the country, communities are speaking out in a united voice to call for an end to the Trump takeover,” said Drucilla Tigner, Executive Director of Texas For All. “Though this fight started in Texas, it doesn’t end here. This isn’t just about redistricting or one state’s politics. It’s about the future of our democracy.”

“From Texas to California to Illinois, the labor movement is united in resisting the Trump takeover,” said Rick Levy, President of the TX AFL-CIO. “This is a defining battle for the future of our democracy, and working people across the country understand the urgent need to act. As this fight continues to spread nationwide, we will stand strong this Saturday—to defend our votes, protect our rights, and stop this redistricting scheme.”

“Donald Trump’s latest scheme is as crooked as it gets – redrawing the maps, rewriting who counts, and threatening to throw opposition lawmakers in jail, all to lock in minority rule for a generation. As a Texan, I am too familiar with corrupt politicians – but what Donald Trump and Greg Abbott are doing is beyond corruption. It’s a damn coup,” said Ezra Levin, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible. “But I also know that Texas is full of courage – from the Democratic leaders refusing Trump and Abbott to take away their democracy to the people on the streets showing up in solidarity with them every day. On Saturday, folks from Alaska to Maine will join Texans in the fight to save our democracy. We’ll show up in full force, and fight for our democracy with every tool we’ve got. This may have started in Texas, but it will end with all of us.”

“What happens in Texas impacts California. As our friends in Texas rise up to resist the Trump takeover of our democratic processes, we in California stand ready to join them in solidarity,” said Jonathan Paik, Executive Director of OC Action. “And we will answer the call for solidarity actions this Saturday to fight for our democracy.”

“Trump’s Texas gerrymander is authoritarian and anti-democratic to its core,” said Robert Weissman, Co-President of Public Citizen. “There’s nothing complicated about what’s going on: Trump fears that voters will penalize him and his party in the next election, so he’s trying to rig the rules. Voters are overwhelmingly opposed to Trump’s stripping healthcare from 17 million Americans, slashing taxes on the super rich, conducting heartless and cruel mass deportations, cutting off investments in renewable energy and more. Straight out of the autocrat playbook, Trump aims to maintain his grip on power despite mounting opposition to his rule.”
