Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is set to become Namibia’s first female president, after the electoral commission said she secured 57% of the vote in last week’s general election.
But opposition parties rejected the result, with some planning a legal challenge.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s ruling SWAPO party also retained its parliamentary majority by a slim margin. Voting was marred by delays after logistical challenges in several polling stations, leading to a controversial extension of the voting period.
Concerns over high unemployment, particularly among young people, fueled the challenge against SWAPO. Some pre-election polls predicted that the party, which has been in government since 1994, would lose power.
Analysts expect broad policy continuity following the election of Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is the country’s current vice-president.
