The NAACP has now weighed in on the explosive case of 15-year old Quawan “Bobby” Charles (above) whose dead mutilated body was found some 20 miles away from his Louisiana home, in a sugar cane field, after he was apparently taken away by a white woman–without the consent of Charles’ parents.

The NAACP issued the following statement regarding the case and the police response to Charles’ death:

“The unusual and untimely death of 15-year old Quawan “Bobby” Charles is heart-wrenching and infuriating. The lack of transparency and urgency put forth by the authorities in Louisiana is a moral failing in the face of a family looking for answers to a loved one’s suspicious death. The dismissal of the Charles family’s concerns by law enforcement and the refusal to issue an amber alert are responsibilities that they failed to implement in a time-sensitive situation involving a minor.

“As more information about this case continues to unravel, we expect and demand that the family is presented with nothing less than justice from those entrusted with managing this case.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragic loss. We stand in solidarity with the family and those seeking justice for Quawan and will remain vigilant to ensure the truth is reached.”

Editor’s Note: Quawan “Bobby” Charles was taken from his Baldwin, Louisiana home on October 30. His dead body was found on November 3rd in a sugar cane field some 20 miles away, in Loreauville, by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

His mutilated body tells a different story than the insinuated drowning scenario that some police suggest. A lawyer for the family points out that Charles was found in a body of water that is no more than two feet deep.

Charles’ family says the local Baldwin Police showed little interest in finding Bobby when the missing person report was filed on October 30, when he went missing. No Amber Alert was initiated–and there was apparently a delay in pinging Charles’ phone to ascertain his whereabouts.

Many media entities in the U.S. have decided not to identify the white woman who took Charles from his home. It took a gruesome picture of Charles’ mutilated head (than many have likened to Emmett Till) to force coverage of this important story. In an earlier Black Star News posting we shared that picture.

However, the British Daily Mail outlet names this white woman as Janet Irvin, 37. Reportedly, Irvin’s son, Gavin, 17, had some sort of friendship with Charles.

According to the Daily Mail, Janet Irvin has an extensive criminal record, which the Mail says include arrests for “burglary and receiving stolen property” and for drug-related charges. Quawan “Bobby” Charles, even as a 15-year-old, was known to be very frugal with saving his money. It is said it would not be unusual for him to have $200 or $300 dollars on him.

Janet Irvin also reportedly temporarily lost custody of her two sons after the children’s father accused her of domestic violence. Irvin has apparently admitting taking Charles to her Chastant Trailer Park home–but claims that he left her home and she didn’t know where he went.

It has been alleged that Janet Irvin was kicked out of her trailer park home–and may now be on the run.
