Museveni Is A Mass Killer And Shouldn’t Host Anti-Genocide Conference

Dictator Museveni now friends with GAAMAC in campaign to whitewash crimes.

[Commentary]

A Conference to denounce “Mass Atrocity Crimes” must not be held in Uganda because the country has been the epicenter of genocide during these 32 years that Gen. Yoweri Museveni has held power.

The many widows and orphans in Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, Somalia and South Sudan can testify to this.

Yet from May 23-25 an intergovernmental organization that calls itself Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes, or GAAMAC, will hold a conference in Kampala, Uganda, in partnership with the regime of dictator Yoweri Museveni.

This is truly macabre.

Presumably GAAMAC would have also held a conference to discuss “Mass Atrocity Crimes” in Uganda when Idi Amin was in power in partnership with his regime? In the Central African Republic as well during the Bokassa era? In Zaire during the Mobutu regime? Why not in the Sudan under Omar Bashir next year?

The massacres carried out by Museveni’s soldiers exceeds the combined totals of the above dictators.

GAAMAC’s decision to hold the conference in Uganda proves two things; it’s either not a legitimate organization or it’s been compromised.

How could Uganda’s dictator of 32 years who has the blood of so many people on his hands host a conference to denounce “Mass Atrocity Crimes”?

Do the organizers really care about the spilling of African blood? Has Museveni bought their conscience so cheaply by offering to host the conference?

This is a blatant insult to the memory of the millions of Ugandans, Rwandans, Congolese, South Sudanese and Somalians who have died as a result of the brutal militarism of Gen. Museveni.

Gen. Museveni’s atrocities have been well-documented by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the U.S. State Department.

The crimes committed by the regime include:

[] the rape and slaughter of people in the northern and eastern parts of Uganda between the 1980s and 2000s and confining the population in concentration camps where possibly one million died over a 20 years period (going by the W.H.O.’s death rates of 1,000 per week above normal mortality) as exhaustively documented in the film “A Brilliant Genocide”

[] the funneling of weapons to brutal rebels in Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan and Congo– thereby sparking or worsening wars in all those countries

[] carrying out a massacre of unarmed civilians including women and children in Kasese, in the Western part of Uganda in November 2016

[] torturing and killing several Ugandan politicians and activists

[] sending security officers dressed in suits to beat Members of Parliament who opposed Museveni’s bid to extend his regime by lifting the age-75 ceiling from the constitution in September 2017; one of them, Betty Nambozee, was beaten so severely her back was broken.

In 2005 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) awarded Congo $10 billion as reparations after it ruled that Uganda’s military –with Gen. Museveni as commander in chief– was liable for what amounted to war crimes in Congo when it occupied the neighboring country from 1998 to 2005.

Not a dime has been paid yet and Ugandan soldiers are again involved in atrocities in Congo.

According to Human Rights Watch, when Museveni’s army invaded South Sudan in 2013 in support of President Salva Kiir in his dispute with Vice President Riek Machar, it used cluster bombs, which is banned by international law.

If GAAMAC is a legitimate organization it would be holding a conference to denounce the atrocities committed by Uganda’s armed forces not whitewashing Museveni’s crimes and thereby encouraging Museveni to commit further atrocities.

By holding its conference in Uganda, GAAMAC debases itself by aiding and abetting Museveni in his scheme to deceive the international community about his true nature– he is the architect of mass murders in East and Central Africa.

The only way GAAMAC can show moral leadership on “Mass Atrocity Crimes” is to move the venue of this conference to another country; or, to postpone it until another host country is secured.
