Venâncio Mondlane, an opposition leader in Mozambique, was hit with five criminal charges last week–including inciting terrorism.

The charges come on the heels of post-election protests that have left at least 300 people dead.

Mondlane alleges he is being victimized by a “judiciary crusade.” The opposition leader came in second, in last October’s election, to President Daniel Chapo.

Mozambique has descended into months of chaos as the opposition claims the election was rigged. International observers, including the European Union, have also voiced concerns about the October election.

Mondlane told reporters that he heads to trial with a “clear conscience” adding that “We have removed the mask of fraud and taken the extreme resistance against a dictatorial regime.”

Mondlane faces up to 24 years in prison.
