The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) has received the 2016 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the Health Professions HEED Award — a national honor recognizing medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing, and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — ISMMS will be featured, along with 30 other recipients, in the December 2016 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
This is the 3rd year in a row that ISMMS has received this recognition.

The culture of diversity we embrace and which is represented in our faculty, trainees, students and staff benefits our educational environment and the diverse community of patients and families we serve,” said Gary Butts, MD.
Butts is Dean for Diversity Programs, Policy and Community Affairs, Director of the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Mount Sinai Health System.
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected ISMMS based on our institution’s exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on our campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, members of the LGBT community.
Specifically, ISSMS’s Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs has developed one of the most comprehensive and impactful diversity programs of medical schools in the nation and has led efforts to achieve one of the most diverse student bodies among U.S. private medical schools.
“The Health Professions HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion. We take a holistic approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
