Washington, DC) – The following statement was released by the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) regarding Tuesday’s shooting at Morgan State University where five people were injured.

The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) extends its heartfelt prayers to the students and staff of Morgan State University and the city of Baltimore, MD after the horrific shooting on campus Tuesday evening during homecoming week.

5 people, including 4 students were shot, none with life threatening injuries. Classes were canceled for the week and homecoming has been canceled.

“On behalf of all our member mayors, we offer our support to AAMA member Mayor Brandon Scott and the Morgan State community during this difficult time,” said AAMA President and Mt. Vernon, NY Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard. “It is heartbreaking to see our children, families and communities continue to be devastated by senseless gun violence. We stand with the mayor and university officials as they work to address the needs of the Morgan State community while the investigation into the shooting continues.”

AAMA and its member mayors remain committed to ending the scourge of gun violence throughout the country, joining with other cities and states in promoting education, advocacy, and support for those affected by gun violence. AAMA mayors rallied the country toward action in June during Gun Violence Awareness Month by passing resolutions and lighting the landmarks in their cities orange in solidarity on June 2, Gun Violence Awareness Day.

The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) is the only organization dedicated to representing over 500 African American mayors across the United States. AAMA seeks to empower local leaders for the benefit of their citizens. The role of the AAMA includes taking positions on public policies that impact the vitality and sustainability of cities; providing mayors with leadership and management tools; and creating a forum for member mayors to share best practices related to municipal management.
