Recently, the shareholders of Meta have filed a lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg and many other former executives of Meta. Moreover, Zuckerberg, along with the former executives, has settled the lawsuit for $8 billion. Furthermore, this amount will cover the damages caused by the breaches of the user’s terms and conditions on Facebook. On July 17, the settlement was finalized in the Court of Justice, Delaware. If the agreement had not been offered, the company would have faced a trial on the internal matters of Meta. Moreover, this trial could have been a rare case when the powerhouse of technology and their internal affairs would be on the same table.

What was the purpose of filing a Lawsuit against Meta?

The shareholders of Meta have accused Mark Zuckerberg and the executives of Meta for violating the privacy conditions of Facebook. According to them, the authorities have been unsuccessful in fulfilling their responsibilities to protect the data of the users. The data breaches are neglected for several years without taking accountability of their actions. The lawsuit allegations have come from a failure to follow the agreement with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It was signed in 2012, but was broken when the revelation of their data multi-access with Cambridge Analytica was made in 2019.

Moreover, the settlement details are not disclosed by the Court and the Meta officials. Additionally, the Court adjourned the trial on an unclear fact before the company appeared for the second day trial. This act has guarded the 11 officials of Meta, including Mark Zuckerberg from any further revelation of their internal details.  However, the officials are still liable to compensate for the damages caused by the data breaches of the Facebook users.

Cambridge Analytica Scandal and Oversight Charges on Meta

The shareholders filed a lawsuit against Meta for the charges of ‘Oversight’ in data handling. However, such cases are considered the most difficult to prove right under the Delaware Corporate Law of the US. The shareholders of Meta are still deliberately accusing the company to neglect their accountability on their violation of Federal laws. They have also claimed that the company’s executive team is involved in the data breaches undergone by one of the largest tech empires.

Moreover, the shareholders hoped that the company’s high profiles would appear for the trial. But their plan to expose their illegal internal operations failed. Furthermore, the trial would have revealed many of the internal affairs and failures of the management to preserve the data of the Facebook users.

When the Cambridge Analytica scandal was revealed, it came to light that Meta has been dealing with the data of users with the company. The data breach was not consented and approved by the users and was an illegal deal. The FTC imposed a $5 billion fine on the company for violating the privacy terms of their agreement.

Furthermore, the shareholders had collected some evidences to show the gaps in the internal meetings of the company. However, the company managed to prove that the internal meetings paid attention to the data prevention measures. Thus, the case weakened because the evidences were proven wrong by several officials.

Conclusion

Therefore, the settlement was a way for the company to get off with all the allegations related to data breaches. Moreover, it was the first time that any case of ‘oversight’ charges could reach the level of the first trial. This shows that the case did have some potential insights about the company’s internal matters. However, they were dismissed as soon as they started with a proper plan in defense.
