TARPON

Christian Odasso and Guy de la Valdene, 1973 (restored in 2023), 54 min.

The first of the modern fishing films, Tarpon, was shot in the wild panorama of 1970s Key West. Colorful scenes of Key West from another era—with treasure hunters, smugglers, hippies, and eccentrics—are background to stunning cinematography and tarpon fishing at its finest. Authors Richard Brautigan, Tom McGuane and Jim Harrison join with legendary flats guides, Woody Sexton, Gil Drake, and Steve Huff as they pose questions about life, art, nature, and catch-and-release fishing.

ALL THAT IS SACRED

Scott Ballew, 2023, 32 min.

In the late 60’s a group of poets, writers and musicians descended upon the lawless tip of the United States to pursue their love of literature and fishing (and cocaine and acid). Initiated by Tom McGuane – the prodigal son of American Literature in the 1970’s – his friends Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, Russell Chatham and Jimmy Buffett soon joined him. This crew and that era were captured on film by Guy De La Valdene and Christian Odasso in an obscure documentary called TARPON in 1974. They went on to create some of the best art, poetry, novels, and music of their generation – but there will never be anything like Key West in the early 70’s. If you were lucky to survive it.

+ Post-screening Q&A with Diana Odasso, followed by a reception!

SUMMER OF SOUL (…Or, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED)

Tickets: FREE, held in Marcus Garvey Park – Richard Rodgers Amphitheater

Thursday, June 13th at 8:30PM

Co-Presented with XFR Collective

Questlove, 2021, 118 min.

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was largely forgotten–until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more.

This screening will take place at the Marcus Garvey Park Richard Rodgers Amphitheater at 18 Mt Morris Park W, New York, NY 10027. The screening will begin around 8:30PM (at sundown!)

This program was made possible with the generous support of the Mellon Foundation, Harlem Grown, the NYC Parks Department, and Searchlight Pictures
