Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, a leading Democratic presidential 2020 candidate, has endorsed New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams for re-election.
In a campaign notice, explaining her support for Public Advocate Williams, Warren says:
“My friend Jumaane Williams isn’t afraid to call out the wrongs that too many people ignore or sweep under the rug.
“I’ve always admired that about him, and I’m very glad to support Jumaane for re-election as Public Advocate this November 5th. If you know him like I do, you understand why.
“Long before this job, and even before he was elected to represent Brooklyn on the City Council, Jumaane was a relentless advocate for justice. He was the kind of person you wanted to fight alongside with. Jumaane saw the inequities in our society and rolled up his sleeves to do something about them. He saw the gap getting wider and wider between the rich and powerful and everyone else in New York City, and he got into the fight to help close it.
“Jumaane has been an outstanding Public Advocate since his historic election in February, but his pro-Trump, special-interest-backed opponent is trying to undo all the progress we’ve made.
“Jumaane was one of the hardest-working advocates I’ve ever seen, and now he’s one of the most dedicated public servants I know. Period. And with Jumaane as Public Advocate, we’ve seen results. He knows how to engage community leaders and other elected officials in ways that benefit all of us.
“In the coming days, I’m going to do everything I can to ensure Jumaane is re-elected — not just because he’s a dear friend, but because I believe in his ability to make New York City an even better place to live.”
Williams was elected Public Advocate in the 2019 Special Election to fill the vacated seat after former Public Advocate Letitia James was elected Attorney General of New York. Williams, known for his principled activism, was endorsed by the Black Star News. Before becoming New York City’s fifth Public Advocate, he served in the New York City Council after beating former Councilman Kendall Stewart in the 2009 primary, before winning in the general election.
