Moses Macedonia African Cemetery located in Bethesda, Maryland is the site of an international hate crime. Moses was first used during slavery as a mass grave for kidnapped African children and adults. It is now located in one of the wealthiest communities in the world. Montgomery County officials and developers have colluded in an unholy alliance to erase all traces of the murders, rapes, child abuse, and terror experienced, first by kidnapped Africans and later by their descendants. An entire community of African Americans on River Road were wiped out and their lands stolen by developers in collusion with local officials. Now, the land is the site of on-going desecration, and the descendant community is locked out of the political process.
County Executive Elrich notified the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition’s lead anthropologist that bones were discovered at the desecrated site, and Elrich was immediately advised to halt any further disturbance of the grave site so that the bones could be scientifically tested to determine whether they were human remains. The anthropology team never received the bones, and when it contacted Elrich, the lead anthropologist was told via email that the bones had been lost, and no further explanation or accountability was offered.
The public must demand that Maryland Congressman Jaime Raskin, Senators Chris Van Holland and Ben Cardin initiate congressional hearings on the desecration and hate crimes occurring in Moses Macedonia African Cemetery as well as other sacred African burial sites in the United States. We would also like to see the United Nations involved in this process, since the first generation of kidnapped individuals retained their African citizenship. For more information, see sources below.
